What's new: Castles & Cottages in Corona will host a spring open house May 19 and 20.

What it is: A home-furnishings store offering home decor products, gifts, designer furniture and apparel. The open house will feature a drawing for a $100 store gift certificate, discounts on purchases, refreshments and a chance to view the store's new line of spring merchandise.

What it offers: It has the look of an Orange County boutique mixed with the charm and ambience of a little shop on the outskirts of Santa Barbara, says owner Adella Montoya. "Women squeal when they walk through our doors," she says. "They say they feel like they're 100 miles away when, in actuality, they're just in the shopping center next to their tract home."

Adella Montoya, owner of Castles & Cottages, was a real estate agent before she opened the business in Corona. She says she puts all her "passion and energy" into the home-furnishings store.

Montoya says one of her goals in opening the shop was to bring the merchandise she enjoys closer to home. Previously, shopping for home furnishings meant a daylong trip out of the county, she says.

The 1,200-square-foot space features a mix of both high-end and low-cost merchandise of very high quality, she says. "I don't sell anything that I wouldn't have in my own home."

The store's name, Castles & Cottages, is reflective of a merchandising strategy to provide furnishings for "large homes, small homes and everything in between," she says.

One of the shop's best-selling items is its selection of Tuscan and Mediterranean framed art, says Montoya. Castles & Cottages also offers a number of higher-end brands such as Caldrea fragranced house-cleaning products, Barefoot Dreams sofa throws, Little Giraffe chenille and satin baby blankets and Wesley Allen iron beds. The shop is also an authorized dealer of Root Candles.

Who owns it: Adella Montoya.

About the owner: Prior to opening the store, Montoya had worked for 10 years as a real estate agent. She says she'd dreamed of opening a day spa in the area for several years until she began work on redecorating a new cabin in Lake Arrowhead.

"I liked the shopping so much I decided I wanted to open a boutique," she said.

Her husband, Rudy, agreed that her passion for shopping should be redirected toward building a store inventory. With her husband's support, she says she was confident it was the right move to make. "It allows me to put all my passion and energy into my shop." she says. "I really believe in the long run, it is going to pay off."

Montoya lives in Corona with her husband and two children.
