CORONA - Mayor Eugene Montanez on Tuesday touted Corona as a city whose economic growth, attitude toward business and emphasis on public safety make it a "community of opportunities."
Almost 500 business owners, community leaders and city officials crowded into a hall at the Eagle Glen Golf Club to hear the mayor's annual State of the City address.
The speech was part of the Corona Chamber of Commerce's quarterly awards luncheon.
"Corona is a great place to grow your business and a great location to call home," Montanez said.
He made a video presentation highlighting some of the key developments in the city including stores and restaurants at The Promenade at Dos Lagos and the Corona Crossings.
He outlined the city's plans to redevelop downtown, transform North Main Street into a more urban, mixed-use and transit-friendly district and expand the Corporation Yard to build a new police station.
He pointed to Corona's 80,000 jobs, its rank as the 20th safest city of its size in California, 99th in the nation, and its $3.36 billion in taxable sales in 2005.
Corona's growth and economic strength have transformed it, he said.
"Corona has matured and has gone beyond just providing housing opportunities," he said.
Montanez also revealed some upcoming developments including two projects planned by builder Rexco -- a second phase to its Corona Pointe project and a business park.
Santa Rosa Development recently purchased the North Main shopping center, which has an indoor swap meet and Sears, with plans to revamp it, he said.
Bobby Spiegel, president of the Corona Chamber of Commerce, said he is looking forward to the developments and his agency's continuing work with the city.
"We've got a very pro-business City Council inclusive of the mayor," Spiegel said. "I think the new developments will exceed all expectations."
