Beard Papa's is a chain of Japanese dessert cafes with one specialty: cream puffs. Flavors range from the original vanilla to green tea, earl grey, chocolate, coffee and pumpkin. Yuji Hirota opened the first Beard Papa's store in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1999. Japan now has more than 230 stores, and outlets are opening in more than 15 countries around the world. Beard Papa's has 18 stores in the United States with plans to open six more in the next few months, including Corona. The first U.S. store opened in New York's Upper West Side in March 2004, with some customers waiting in line for up to three hours.
The chain takes pride in its "fresh-from-the-oven" cream puffs, which consist of a proprietary double layer of soft French "choux" and outside pie crust. Each puff is filled with a "secret recipe" whipped cream custard after each customer places an order.
